Joint and Nerve Blocks

Vertiflex Procedure

The Vertiflex Procedure is a minimally invasive treatment designed for patients suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal that can cause leg and lower back pain when standing or walking. This FDA-approved treatment involves inserting a small spacer between the spinous processes in the lower back to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves. The procedure is performed through a tiny incision and typically takes less than an hour. It offers a significant reduction in pain, improved mobility, and a quick recovery time, making it a valuable alternative to more invasive spine surgeries.

Minuteman Procedure

The Minuteman procedure is a minimally invasive spinal fusion technique designed to stabilize the spine and reduce pain caused by conditions such as spondylolisthesis or spinal stenosis. It involves placing a small implant between the vertebrae through a lateral approach without cutting into major muscles. The implant helps fuse the spine and restore alignment, relieving pressure on the spinal nerves. This outpatient procedure is typically completed in under an hour with a quick recovery time.

MILD (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression)

The MILD procedure is designed for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis. It involves removing small pieces of overgrown ligament and bone through a tiny incision to relieve pressure on spinal nerves. It is performed under X-ray guidance and typically doesn’t require stitches or general anesthesia.

Intracept® Procedure

The Intracept Procedure targets the basivertebral nerve within the vertebral body, which is a common source of chronic low back pain due to degenerative disc disease. A probe is inserted into the vertebra and uses radiofrequency energy to ablate the nerve, offering long-lasting pain relief without affecting spinal stability.

Basivertebral Nerve (BVN) Ablation

This procedure, part of the Intracept system, treats vertebrogenic pain by ablating the basivertebral nerve inside the vertebrae. It is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that provides long-term relief for patients with chronic, aching low back pain that hasn’t responded to conservative treatments.

SI Joint Fusions

SI joint fusion is used for patients with chronic SI joint pain that has not improved with conservative treatments. The procedure involves placing implants across the SI joint to stabilize it and reduce pain. It is done through a small incision and often leads to improved mobility and function.

Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS)

Spinal cord stimulation involves implanting a device that sends electrical pulses to the spinal cord to mask pain signals before they reach the brain. It is used for chronic nerve pain, including failed back surgery syndrome and complex regional pain syndrome. A trial period precedes permanent implantation to ensure effectiveness.

Intrathecal Pain Pumps

These implanted devices deliver pain medication directly into the spinal fluid, providing targeted pain relief with smaller doses than oral medication. They are used for severe chronic pain and can help reduce side effects while improving quality of life.

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS)

PNS involves placing small electrodes near specific peripheral nerves to deliver mild electrical impulses that interrupt pain signals. It is effective for conditions such as nerve injuries, post-surgical pain, migraines, and joint pain. PNS systems may be temporary or implanted long-term.

Spinal Cord Stimulator Battery Replacement

When the battery in a spinal cord stimulator reaches the end of its lifespan, it can be replaced in a minor outpatient procedure. The old battery is removed, and a new one is implanted, typically in the same location.

Spinal Cord Stimulator System Swap

If a spinal cord stimulator system becomes outdated or ineffective, it can be entirely replaced. A system swap includes replacing the leads and generator, often to upgrade to newer technology or improve coverage.

Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat painful vertebral compression fractures, often caused by osteoporosis or trauma. A balloon is inserted into the collapsed vertebra, inflated to create space, and filled with medical-grade bone cement. This stabilizes the bone, restores height, and relieves pain.

Sacroplasty

Sacroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure to treat sacral insufficiency fractures, commonly caused by osteoporosis. Bone cement is injected into the sacrum under imaging guidance to stabilize the fracture and reduce pain. It is similar to kyphoplasty but performed in the sacrum.

Short and Long-Term Care for Chronic Pain

We understand that every patient’s path to wellness is different, so we focus on creating personalized strategies that not only relieve pain but also improve long-term function and quality of life. We begin with a detailed evaluation to understand how pain affects each person’s movement, sleep, work, and daily living. Based on this, we recommend a tailored mix of interventional and non-invasive therapies, which may include physical therapy coordination, lifestyle support, and advanced procedures like nerve blocks or joint injections. While medication management is available when needed, it’s not usually our first step—we aim to reduce reliance on medication through long-term pain relief strategies. Our team works closely with patients to prevent flare-ups and build sustainable plans. Whether your pain is new or ongoing, we’re here to guide you toward better health, one step at a time.

Pain relief doesn’t end with a single treatment. It can be a process that requires ongoing management and awareness of triggers that can cause pain. Our pain management clinic helps patients build and maintain long-term strategies to stay ahead of recurring symptoms.

Education can be key. Understanding the causes of flare-ups can be an important first step. Common causes of flare-ups include:

  • Poor posture
  • Repetitive movements
  • Stress
  • Certain activities
  • Lack of physical activity or mobility
  • Sleep disruption or poor sleep positioning
  • Skipping follow-up care or prescribed treatments
  • Inflammation triggered by diet or illness

Recognizing your pain triggers empowers you to make choices that support daily comfort and long-term health. While you work with our team, we’ll work with you to evaluate your daily habits and physical activity to identify patterns that may be contributing to your pain. We also emphasize movement and physical conditioning. Gentle exercise, physical therapy, and posture training can help protect your spine and joints while improving your circulation and flexibility.

Many people find that dietary changes or sleep improvements can support healing and reduce inflammation. For those managing chronic nerve pain, we can discuss long-term monitoring and possible follow-up injections or neuromodulation options as needed.
